Dresser vs Chest of Drawers: Which Storage Piece Fits Your Bedroom?
Posted by Isabella Moreau / Luxury Bedroom Furniture / October 02, 2026
Walk into any well-appointed bedroom across Europe, and you'll notice something interesting. The most elegant spaces don't just look beautiful—they breathe. There's a sense of order, a quiet confidence in how everything has its place. Much of that harmony comes down to one decision that seems simple but rarely is: choosing between a dresser and a chest of drawers.
If you're furnishing a luxury hotel suite, a private residence, or a refined home in Paris, Milan, or Vienna, this choice matters more than you might think. Get it right, and your bedroom feels like a sanctuary. Get it wrong, and you're bumping into furniture every morning or staring at empty wall space that could have been working harder.
Let's clear up the confusion once and for all.
The Fundamental Difference: Width vs. Height
Here's what most people don't realize: a dresser and a chest of drawers aren't interchangeable terms. They're fundamentally different pieces designed for different spaces and different needs.
A dresser is wide and low. Typically measuring 120 to 180 centimeters in width and standing 75 to 90 centimeters tall, dressers stretch horizontally across your wall. Most feature six to nine drawers arranged in two or three columns, with a mirror often mounted on top. Think of the classic pieces you'd find in a Parisian hôtel particulier or a luxury suite at The Ritz.
A chest of drawers, by contrast, climbs vertically. These pieces usually stand 100 to 130 centimeters tall with a narrower width of 80 to 100 centimeters. The drawers stack in a single column—typically five to seven—creating a tower of storage that draws the eye upward.
The distinction matters because it affects everything: how you move through the room, what you can store, and even how spacious your bedroom feels.
Storage Capacity: The Numbers Tell a Story
When clients ask me about dresser vs chest of drawers for their bedroom, I always start with a simple question: what are you actually storing?
A standard luxury dresser offers between 180 to 270 liters of storage volume. The wide drawers accommodate everything from folded cashmere sweaters to bulky winter linens. The top surface provides additional real estate for perfume bottles, jewelry boxes, or a carefully curated vignette of art objects.
A chest of drawers typically provides 150 to 200 liters—slightly less overall volume, but with an important advantage. The vertical arrangement means better organization. You can dedicate specific drawers to specific items: undergarments up top where they're easy to reach, heavier items below.
For a luxury hotel setting, dressers often win. Guests appreciate the expansive surface for unpacking and spreading out personal items. For private homes, particularly those with extensive wardrobes, a chest of drawers often makes more sense—especially when paired with a separate vanity or dressing table.
Room Size: Matching Scale to Space
This is where theory meets reality. That stunning 180-centimeter dresser might look perfect in a showroom, but will it overwhelm your bedroom?
For spacious master bedrooms (25 square meters and above), a dresser makes a compelling statement. It anchors the room, provides generous storage, and creates a natural focal point. In luxury homes across Europe, I'm seeing a trend toward pairing a wide dresser with a statement mirror—creating a functional dressing area that eliminates the need for a separate vanity.
For compact bedrooms (15 to 20 square meters), a chest of drawers is often the smarter choice. Its vertical footprint means you get substantial storage without sacrificing precious floor space. A well-proportioned chest can fit comfortably against a wall that wouldn't accommodate a dresser's width, leaving room for easier movement and better flow.
For hotel suites and guest rooms, consider the guest experience. A chest of drawers near the bed provides convenient access to essentials. A dresser works beautifully in larger suites where guests stay longer and need more unpacking space.
The Luxury Factor: Materials and Craftsmanship
When we talk about a luxury dresser or chest of drawers, we're not discussing mass-produced particle board. European luxury furniture means solid oak, walnut, or cherry. It means hand-dovetailed joints, soft-close mechanisms, and finishes applied by craftspeople who've spent decades perfecting their technique.
A luxury dresser in a high-end hotel might feature marble tops, brass hardware, and intricate marquetry. A luxury chest of drawers could showcase book-matched veneers or hand-carved details that transform functional furniture into art.
The investment differs too. A quality luxury dresser typically starts around €3,000 and can easily reach €15,000 for bespoke pieces. Chests of drawers often start slightly lower, around €2,500, with exceptional pieces commanding similar prices to their wider counterparts.
Making Your Decision: A Practical Framework
Still torn between a dresser or chest of drawers for your bedroom? Ask yourself these questions:
How much wall space do you actually have? Measure twice. Remember, you need clearance to open drawers fully and move comfortably around the piece.
What's your storage priority? Maximum volume and surface area point toward a dresser. Organized, categorized storage favors a chest.
Who's using this piece? Couples often prefer dressers for shared storage. Individual users might find a chest more intuitive.
What's your room's proportions? Long, narrow bedrooms benefit from a dresser's horizontal emphasis. Rooms with high ceilings come alive with a chest's vertical draw.
The Verdict
There's no universal winner in the dresser vs chest of drawers debate. There's only what's right for your space, your lifestyle, and your aesthetic vision.
For sprawling luxury homes and hotel suites where grandeur matters, a dresser delivers presence and practicality in equal measure. For refined bedrooms where every square meter counts, a chest of drawers offers elegance without excess.
Whichever you choose, invest in quality. In the world of luxury furniture, craftsmanship isn't just about beauty—it's about creating pieces that serve you beautifully for decades. And in Europe's finest bedrooms, that longevity is perhaps the ultimate luxury.
